Cruise Job Description of Cruise Line Activity Coordinators:
Cruise ship jobs are available for those who enjoy helping people with their leisure activities. Activity coordinators work mainly with children and teens supervising and coordinating various activities including arts and crafts, bingo, team games like volleyball, badminton, and basketball, and children’s board games. Some ships have children’s centers with swimming pools, sand boxes, and recreational equipment. Activity coordinators sometimes act as babysitters for specific children, which parents pay for. Activity coordinators may accompany groups of children and teens on shore excursions. These persons act as chaperons for scheduled teen parties and help to organize teens for recreation and games in the swimming pools, for shuffleboard, and for activities on the ship’s printed program.
They also help with adult activities such as bingo, arts and crafts, shuffleboard tournaments, or other adult activities. Activity coordinators show movies for both children and adults. They assist in readying lecture halls, party rooms, and deck areas for planned ship activities.
Cruise ship activity coordinators wear uniforms furnished, and usually, cleaned and pressed by the cruise line. They work according to scheduled events, and report to an activity director or cruise director.
Activity coordinators must enjoy working with all age groups, especially children and teens. It is helpful if these personnel are artistic and athletic. Cruise lines work very hard to provide a wide array of activities for youth on board ships, but activity coordinators must still be creative, encouraging, energetic and PATIENT in setting up youth activities.
Wages for this type of cruise ship job include a base wage plus tips, incentive pay and bonuses. These personnel are allowed shore leave for up to three months at varying times of the year (but usually not in the summer months). Summertime is the busiest time of the year for activity coordinators since this is when children are most likely to be on board ship, while on board ship, these workers receive free room and board.
Basic Requirements for this Cruise Ship Job: At least one year of related experience (such as teaching, work in children’s campus “and centers or with children’s clubs, teen counseling, and work with youth in public or private recreation centers), friendly manner, and a predisposition for working with youth.
